9D8N New Zealand Scenic Train Journey (Self drive)

Inclusions: 8 nights accommodation, 8 days rental car with basic insurance, unlimited mileage & road maps.

Drivers Licence and Minimum Age

– Minimum rental age is 21 years. (Surcharge applies for 21-24 year olds)

– Drivers must present a full national driving licence which has been least for at least one year. 

– A current international driving linence or translation must accompany driving licences not in the English language.

9D8N SCENIC TRAIN JOURNEY
Day 1: Arrive Christchurch
On arrival at Christchurch Airport, collect your rental car for your exclusive use until the end of the package.

 
Day 2:Christchurch – Dunedin (365 KMS) 
Travel south across the Canterbury Plains through Timaru and Oamaru to reach Dunedin early afternoon. Rest of the afternoon is free for optional activities, such as wildlife cruises. 

Day 3: Dunedin – Tairti Gorge Train – Queenstown (299 KMS)
Morning free for further optional activities. In the afternoon you will be collected for the spectacular Taieri Gorge Train to Pukerangi and connecting coach ride to Alexandra, Cromwell before arriving at Queenstown. (Self-drive passengers are free to participate in more optional activities before driving to Queenstown).

Day 4: Queestown 
Today you will cruise on the vintage ‘Old Lady’, the TSS Earnslaw, to Walter Peak High Country Farm for an excursion of the Colonel’sHomestead. (replaced with an alternative activity in June and July). Time for optional  sights and activities such as the Ziptrek Ecotours flying fox through the forest or a visit to the AJ Hackett Bungy jump site.

Day 5: Queenstown – West coast glaciers (420KMS) 
Travel through the Kawarau Gorge past Lake Dunstan on towards Wanaka. A stop is made in Makarora before crossing the Southern Alps as you enter the Haast Pass. At Knights Point you can view magnificent seascapes. From here pass Lakes Moeraki and Paringa then past Bruce Bay to arrive at the Glaciers.

Day 6: West Coast Glaciers – Nelson (480 KMS) 
Travel north to Westport before arriving at Punakaiki for a view of the amazing Pancake Rock formations. Then through the Buller River and amazing Pancake Rock formations. Then through the Buller River and Buller Gorge to arrive in Nelson in the late evening.

Day 7: Nelson – Picton – Kaikoura (250KMS) 
Take the scenic Queen Charlotte Drive along the Sounds to arrive at Picton to connect with the Coastal Pacific Train to Kaikoura, the whale watching centre of New Zealand. (Self-drive passengers will drive to Kaikoura).

Day 8: Kaikoura – Christchurch (190KMS) 
Free time until you board your Coastal Pacific train back to Christchurch for the night.
(Self-drive passengers will drive back to Christchurch).

Day 9: Depart Christchurch 
An Open Top Double Decker City Highlights Tour is recommended before your return your car directly at the airport.
