Bangkok offers an experience that is unique in every sense of the word. From the amazing historical architecture and art, to the delectable restaurant and street cuisine, to the fascinating local culture, there is something here to be enjoyed by all. Historically, unlike its neighbouring countries, Thailand has never been colonized by a Western power. This is why it can boast of a cultural tradition that goes far back in time, unbroken by any colonial domination. This helps to explain the sheer variety of awe-inspiring places and historical sights to visit in Bangkok.
For a start, get on the ultra-efficient city train, and get down near the Chao Phraya River. From there, get on a boat and cruise down the river, and you will already be treated to a number of towering and beautiful temples. One of these is the Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun, and it's easy to identify with its central 70 meter sloping spire, surrounded by smaller spires. This temple complex is illuminated at night, bringing out the beauty of its glass, porcelain and tile surfaces.
You can also easily make your way from the river to the appropriately-named Grand Palace. This is a sprawling and spectacular complex with majestic-looking buildings and many statues, murals and other works of art. It has served as the official home for the country's monarchy since the 1700's. These are only two of the many truly marvelous temples and buildings to see in Bangkok.
Bangkok also offers a great food experience for travelers. There's nothing quite like tasting authentic Thai cuisine the way they are supposed to be made, right in the heart of Bangkok. This city has an abundance of restaurants and eating places, from fine dining establishments to hole-in-the-wall eateries. In fact, to get a true taste for what the city has to offer, consider visiting its sidewalks in the evenings. Whether you choose to gorge on noodle soup, sticky rice, duck, curry, dumplings, grilled meat on skewers, or something else, both your stomach and your wallet will thank you.
